A CentiMark Corporation Case Study:Geisinger Health Systems

The Details:

CentiMark installed a ballasted EPDM (rubber) single ply roof system over 13 separate roof sections on the Abagail Pavilion portion of the hospital. The hospital is a major trauma center and covers a 14 county area with it’s helicopter. The project was a total of 59,864 square feet and included the helipad, operating room and dietary kitchen.

The Challenges:

The roof sections to be replaced were ballasted thermoplastic roof systems |of which access was very limited in several locations. Five (5) of the roof sections were surrounded by other higher roof sections This limited access meant repetitive handling of material, equipment and old roof removal debris. When the helicopter needed to land, CentiMark only had a 15-20 minute warning to get the crew and materials off the roof.

The CentiMark Solutions:

CentiMark’s solution was to install a ballasted EPDM single ply roof system due to the limited access to the various roof area. Ten feet wide rolls of material were used instead of the normal twenty feet wide rolls because of the multiple hand loading that had to take place. The existing ballast on the roof was reused and the insulation was existing lightweight fill. The reuse of these materials kept the debris that needed to be removed to a minimum. On the land locked sections, the debris was removed at night through the hospital maintenance corridors and elevators.

All roof work over the operating rooms took place at night when there was no surgery scheduled. VOC-compliant adhesive was used on the wall flashings as there were multiple HVAC intake vents along the building walls. CentiMark kept in constant communication with the hospital especially when working on the helipad roof. Only small sections of roof could be worked on at a time to minimize roof materials and debris on the roof in the emergency need of a helicopter landing or take-off.

The Results:

CentiMark was able to install the sections of the roof with minimal disruptions or disturbances to the critical, life-saving work of the hospital. CentiMark continues roof work on other areas of the facility.
