Energy Star Program

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy designed to promote the use of energy efficient products and practices that also help protect the environment.

Energy efficient choices can save families about a third on their energy bill with similar savings of greenhouse gas emissions, without sacrificing features, style or comfort. ENERGY STAR labelled products help you make smart energy efficient choices.

Roofing products that promote energy efficiency are listed on the Energy Star Approved Products Directory at the following website http://www.energystar.gov/ia/products/prod_lists/roof_prods_prod_list.pdf.

The roof products that promote energy efficiency according to Energy Star guidelines are reflective roofs that maintain most of their reflectivity even after being exposed on actual jobs for three years or more.

Specifically, the Energy Star Roof Products’ criteria irequires test evidence that initial reflectivity values and three year old reflectivity values meet a minimum of 0.50 for the three year old products and a minimum of  0.65 for new products when tested per ASTM E903 or ASTM C1549. The aged products must come from a minimum of three identified jobs and three different locations and at least one of these locations must be in a metropolitan area. Each location sampled must have a minimum of three specimens taken to derive an average value.

Energy Star roofing products do not have to test for emissivity the way CRRC and Title 24 require.
