HVAC Ductwork - Saving Money through the Roof

HVAC Ductwork - Saving Money through the Roof

HVAC Ductwork - Saving Money through the Roof

by Ron Boucher, Service Director, Houston, TX

Property owners are always looking for ways to save money

HVAC

Over the years, we’ve seen examples where the HVAC unit and ductwork were rusting, leaking and/or not keeping the cold air cold.

What are the solutions to help the building owner?   First, treat the rust on the HVAC components and ductwork with chemical or primer inhibitors. The key is to stop the corrosion process or you have defeated the purpose.

The next step is to mechanically attach polyisocyanurate insulation to the exterior of metal duct to hold the cold air inside. Then, a fully-adhered 45 ml EPDM (rubber) membrane is applied to all the exposed insulation. The final step is to apply a white elastomeric coating to keep the pipes cooler and to reflect the sun’s rays.

To summarize:
1. Repair any leaks in the ductwork and units
2. Stop the corrosive process on the ductwork and units
3. Keep the cold air cold
4. Maximize the efficiency of the unit
5. Repairs will pay for themselves in energy savings and decreased electric bills
6. HVAC units should last longer

In hot-weather states like Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California, the energy savings translates into saving money, as the roof ductwork is much more efficient and the cold air stays cold.
