State of the Commercial Roofing Industry
The NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) identified the changes listed below as significant challenges to the supply chain in the commercial roofing industry.
In 2020 and 2021, the changes in the world were both global and a perfect storm: the pandemic, the fires in the northwest United States, hurricanes, hail storms, flooding, working from home, stimulus money that changed consumer spending, blockage of trade ships in the Suez Canal, trade wars with China and the shortage of commercial truck drivers.
According to the NRCA, these problems have created unprecedented supply chain disruptions, challenges and shortages affecting roofing materials, tools and accessories. All manufacturers have announced price changes due to the increased costs of manufacturing and the low inventory of raw materials.
Additionally, the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season was the most active on record and the fifth costliest with $51 billion in damages and 12 named storms with Louisiana being the hardest hit state. Supply and labor shortages to rebuild after the hurricanes were a serious challenge for roofing contractors.
As an essential service provider, CentiMark quickly adapted to both the public and private mandates and restrictions that were put in place during the pandemic. We changed the way we sold roofs, adapted to health and safety requirements and protocols for our associates and our customers, and listened to our customers' changing needs. As such, we are cautiously optimistic that our business levels will reach new record levels in 2021.
“At CentiMark, we continue to see significant price pressure and extended lead times on nearly all construction-related materials,” says James Patterson, C.P.M., CentiMark Senior Vice President. “The supply related issues will continue into the fall with no anticipated relief until early 2022.”
Moving forward, communication is the key. Roofing contractors have to manage expectations with their customers about when a job will start, when it will be completed and update them on the pricing increases. Communication regarding any unanticipated delays with supplies and materials is essential. If possible, procure supplies and materials as soon as the roofing contract is signed to avoid shortages and to be realistic with job timelines.
The State of the Commercial Roofing industry is good. Yes, there are challenges with labor shortages, supply chain disruptions and price increases. However, CentiMark is ready to get your roof on the right track. Talk to a CentiMark representative today and let’s get started:

Roof and Floor Safety
The question YOU should be asking: How safe is my roof and floor?
Roof Safety
Keeping your roof as safe as possible is imperative. When dealing with heights, ensuring that your roof is in good condition in addition to the proper safety measures and safety equipment is critical.
First, we always recommend scheduling an inspection of your roof. This will help you understand the condition of your roof so you can develop a condition-based strategy to address your needs. An inspection will provide you with a written report, photos and suggested repair or replacement recommendations.
It is also a good idea to consider safety accessories to help keep your roof safe for your employees and contractors. Some of these include roof hatches, safety rails, walkpads and skylight screens. At CentiMark, we’ll work with you to ensure compliance and to protect you, your assets and employees.
Floor Safety
Same-level slips, trips and falls have cost employers billions of dollars in worker’s compensation costs. Areas of spalling, cracks, holes or damaged joints on your floors can be hazardous to your customers and employees if not properly repaired or patched.
It’s important to identify these hazards to determine any needed repairs. A thorough safety inspection will help identify potential safety hazards such as spalled or cracked floors and damaged joints from heavy equipment or wear and tear. The inspection includes photos and written documentation for recommended repairs along with useful products for your in-house maintenance staff, such as do-it-yourself patch and repair products.
Getting these areas repaired will provide a safer environment for employees and customers.
From the top of your building to the bottom, our number one priority is your safety. Be proactive; schedule a safety inspection today.
