Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced Operation Safe Driver Week - July 15 -21, 2018.
Operation Safe Driver week affects everyone with a driver's license driving a vehicle.
The Operation Safe Driver Program was created to help reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries due to unsafe driving behaviors. During Operation Safe Driver Week, there will be increased DOT (Department of Transportation) and passenger vehicle enforcement.
According to CVSA, "Traffic safety personnel will be on the lookout for unsafe driving behaviors by commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passenger vehicle drivers as we work toward zero deaths on our roadways."
Here are some examples of what enforcement officials will be looking for:
- Failure to use a seatbelt while operating a commercial motor vehicle or in a passenger vehicle
- Distracted driving
- Failure to obey traffic control devices
- Following too closely
- Improper lane change
According to CVSA the top five warning and citations issued to CMV (DOT) drivers in 2017 were:
- Failure to use a seatbelt
- Failure to obey a traffic control device
- Using a hand held phone
Driving safely and defensively is every driver’s responsibility.
